Theological Criticism of the Batak Traditional Tradition regarding the Practice of Respecting One's Parents and Ancestors According to Exodus 12:1

Abstract

Batak culture must continue to be preserved as a national culture. However, it is also necessary to have biblical boundaries, so that the Batak cultural actors can carry out this culture well and not sin against God. The purpose of writing this scientific work is to provide a theological critique of the practice of implementing Batak cultural traditions in carrying out acts of respect for parents and ancestors. This research is expected to provide enlightenment or biblical spiritual guidance for Batak traditional leaders in particular and the Batak community in general. The research method uses a qualitative approach by collecting sources from scientific journals and books that present Batak culture. The results of the research show that there are some things that are theologically criticized with regard to the practice of honoring parents and ancestors which has been passed down from generation to generation. Therefore, this research is very important and can be used as a reference for churches in guiding their people in carrying out traditions of respecting parents and ancestors.
